भारतीय सैन्य पायलट विंग कमांडर राकेश शर्मा अंतरिक्ष में जानेवाले पहले भारतीय हैं। 13 जनवरी, 1949 को पटियाला में जनमे राकेश शर्मा सन 1970 में फाइटर पायलट के रूप में भारतीय वायु सेना में शामिल हुए। सन 1971 के भारत-पाक युद्ध में उन्होंने कम-से-कम 21 बार उड़ान भरी। वे अंतरिक्ष में यात्रा करनेवाले पहले भारतीय और विश्व के 138वें अंतरिक्ष यात्री बने।
यह अंतरिक्ष मिशन लगभग 8 दिनों तक चला और 11 अप्रैल, 1984 को राकेश शर्मा एवं उनका दो सदस्यीय सोवियत दल पृथ्वी पर कजाकिस्तान लौट आया। ‘हीरो ऑफ द सोवियत यूनियन’ का सम्मान पानेवाले वे पहले भारतीय भी हैं। उन्हें अपने रूसी सह-अंतरिक्ष यात्रियों के साथ ‘अशोक चक्र’ सम्मान भी मिला।
सेना से पद-मुक्ति के बाद सन 1987 में राकेश शर्मा हिंदुस्तान एयरोनॉटिक्स लिमिटेड में मुख्य परीक्षण पायलट के रूप में सम्मिलित हुए, जिसे उन्होंने 2001 में स्वचालित वर्क फ्लो बोर्ड का अध्यक्ष बनने के बाद छोड़ दिया।

Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma, a former Indian Air Force pilot, is the first Indian to go to space. Rakesh Sharma was born in Patiala on January 13, 1949. He joined the Indian Air Force in 1970 as a fighter pilot. During the Indo-Pak war of 1971, Rakesh flew for at least 21 times. He was the first Indian and the 138th person to travel in space.
On April 3, 1984, Rakesh Sharma went into space on a Soyuz T-11 with two Soviet cosmonauts, Commander Yuri Vasilyevich Malyshev and Flight Engineer Gennady Mikhailovich Strekalov. In a joint programme of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the Soviet Interkosmos Space Programme, the former Indian Air Force pilot spent 7 days, 21 hours and 40 minutes in space. Wing CommanderRakesh Sharma, AC (born 13 January 1949) is an Indian astronaut and a former Indian Air Force officer. He flew aboard Soyuz T-11 on 3 April 1984 as part of the SovietInterkosmos programme. He is the only Indian citizen to travel in space, although there have been other astronauts of Indian origin who travelled to space, who were not Indian citizens.[1][2] Another Air Force pilot, Ravish Malhotra, was placed on standby.[3]
Early life
[edit]Born on 13 January 1949 in Patiala of present-day Punjab, India into a Punjabi family.[4] Sharma attended St. George's Grammar School, Hyderabad[4] and graduated from Nizam College, Hyderabad. He joined the National Defence Academy as an air force plebe in July 1966[5] and was commissioned into the Indian Air Force as a pilot in 1970.[6
