Ernst was one of the greatest violinists of the 19th century, praised by many famous composers and critics, but he is not well known today due to a lack of biographical information about his life. As a Jewish musician living in a time of widespread anti-Semitism, Ernst avoided documentation and leaving traces of his life in order to protect himself. He lived a nomadic lifestyle, moving frequently, which undermined his health and made collaborating on compositions difficult. The lack of information about Ernst has been further exacerbated by lost documents, world wars that destroyed records and killed his family members, and the changing political boundaries where he lived.
