  • Andrew Michael Holness was elected Jamaica’s ninth Prime Minister in He previously served as Prime Minister from October to January He is Jamaica’s youngest Prime Minister to date, and the first to be born after National Independence.

    Holness was first elected a Member of Parliament for the Jamaica Labour Party at the age of 25 and is in his fourth consecutive term. Previously, he served as Opposition Spokesperson on Land and Development, Housing, and Education, and as Minister of Education, where he focused on improving literacy in Jamaica and oversaw the introduction of the Career Advancement Programme –a post-secondary technical and vocational training programme for unattached youth. He has retained the Education Portfolio as Prime Minister.

    Holness previously served as Prime Minister from 23 October to 5 January He succeeded Bruce Golding as Prime Minister and decided to go to the polls in the 29 December general election in an attempt to get his own mandate from the Jamaican electorate. He failed in that bid, however, losing to the People's National Party led by Portia Simpson-Miller, with the PNP gaining 42 seats to the JLP's Following that defeat, Holness served as Leader of the Opposition from January to March , when he once again assumed the position of prime minister.[1] In , the Labour Party won a landslide in another general election, and on 7 September Holness was sworn in for another term as Prime Minister.[2]
