Bram Stoker’s Dracula is Francis Ford Coppola’s brilliant homage to the wonders of cinema. Coppola honors film with allusions to the magic of early cinematograph and a contribution to the long legacy of vampire films. However, with Gary Oldman as the desperate and thirsty Count, Winona Ryder as his reincarnated Elisabeta, and Tom Waits as the bug-eating Renfield, Coppola’s version also steps boldly into the present, bringing to the fore themes earlier versions could only suggest. Coppola’s audacity is visual as well, a startling display of technical wizardry. This Dracula is ultimately a challenge to viewers to explore the possibilities of passion, in film and of the heart.
