During World War II when he was in his 20s, Mr. Dyby participated in an underground mobilization in that smuggled virtually all of the 8, Jews living in Denmark across the narrow body of water between Denmark and Sweden within a matter of weeks, keeping them out of the hands of the Nazis who were occupying Denmark at the time.
Mr. Dyby, who was born in Randers, Denmark in , emigrated to the United States after World War II, settling in Novato.
Nearly 40 years passed before Mr. Dyby received much recognition for his valor. In the s, when many Holocaust survivors finally began speaking out about their experiences, Mr. Dyby started talking to groups about his story.

On November 9, , Knud Dyby was honored again by the Los Angeles Simon Wiesenthal Center for his humanitarian efforts during WW II. He was there as a representative of a small nation that showed the world it is possible for ordinary people to stand firm against the forces of evil. For his efforts, he has been recognized by numerous Jewish organizations for his courage in helping Danish Jews escape from the Germans to neutral Sweden.

A hero, humanitarian, inventor, Novato neighbor and friend, Knud Dyby, passed away last week, Sept. 8, at age And though his was a long and full life, he still left us too soon.
We first came to know Knud through shared human rights interests. Often promoting his own philosophy, what he called the “Three ‘C’s”: Compassion, Conscience and Consideration, Knud believed we all have a responsibility to stand against bigotry regardless of the group being targeted. Knud’s philosophy and actions took shape during one of the darkest times in our history and would continue until the end of his life.
