Don’t make the mistake that it won’t, as Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez and his camp are making — acting all cocky and over-confident talking about a win like it’s a basketball game. The events of the past week will make a difference. Maybe on Aug. 14. Maybe another day.

Mayors of cities across the nation sounded off Thursday in defiance of President Donald Trump’s executive order aimed at punishing local governments that don’t comply with federal immigration officials. But the mayor of South Florida’s immigrant hub took an entirely different stance, ordering county jails to “fully cooperate” with the federal government in light of Trump’s vaguely worded order.
Carlos Gimenez, the Republican mayor of Miami-Dade County, sent a memo to the county’s corrections director Thursday ordering county jails to comply with federal immigration detention requests, essentially abandoning the county’s status as a “sanctuary” for undocumented immigrants. The county, recently listed as a sanctuary by the Department of Justice, is perhaps among the first municipalities to move to change its practices after Trump signed the executive order.

Walt Disney World to close theme parks through end of month
MIAMI (AP) — Theme parks at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida and Disneyland Paris Resort will be closing through the end of the month, starting at the close of business Sunday, the Walt Disney Company announced.
The company said in a statement Thursday that the decision was made "in an abundance of caution" to protect guests and employees amid the global outbreak of the new coronavirus. The decision came hours after the announcement of the planned closure of Disneyland in California.
Additionally, Disney Cruise Line will suspend all new departures beginning Saturday and continuing through the end of the month, the statement said. The Walt Disney Company will pay its cast members during that closure period, according to the release.
The hotels at Walt Disney World and Disneyland Paris will remain open, along with the shops and restaurants at Disney Springs at Walt Disney World and Disney Village at Disneylan
