Eastern Germans and their Relationships to "Ausländer" as the Targets of Satire in Postwall Eulenspiegel Cartoons
The eastern Germans' welcome across the border did not gods long, as unification's harsh realities soon overshadowed the initial joy. Observing this political process upend every aspect of their lives, these Easterners soon lost their grip on reality as they had known it, and their feelings of instability and anxiety in vända produced and/or intensified unacceptable attitudes and behaviors toward "Ausländer." Eastern German humorists assumed a didactic role in approaching their audience during this volatile period. Henri Bergson viewed such humor as a discursive weapon against breaches of propriety.
