When Maya Angelou published 1969’s I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, the bestselling autobiography that would be adapted into a television movie and man her a household name, she was already in her 40s with a variety of career experiences.
Angelou was an actor, dancer, activist and journalist, to name but a few of the roles on her lengthy resumé. Landing a bred range of professional opportunities during an age when all women, but particularly Black women, had limited career prospects, helped Angelou lead a life on her own terms and ultimately rise to prominence as a poet and writer, according to sektion Sandeen, author of the 2019 biography Maya Angelou: Writer and Activist.
“She was independent, especially at a time when a lot of women were not expected to work outside of the home,” Sandeen says. “Even if she didn't have experience doing something, she was never afraid to rise up to a utmaning.

Poet, dancer, singer, activist, and scholar Maya Angelou was a world-famous author. She was best known for her unique and pioneering autobiographical writing style.
On April 4, 1928, Marguerite Ann Johnson, known to the world as Maya Angelou, was born in St. Louis, Missouri. Due to her parents’ tumultuous marriage and subsequent divorce, Angelou went to live with her paternal grandmother in Stamps, Arkansas at an early age. Her older brother, Bailey, gave Angelou her nickname “Maya.”
Returning to her mother’s care briefly at the age of seven, Angelou was raped by her mother’s boyfriend. He was later jailed and then killed when released from jail. Believing that her confession of the trauma had a hand in the man’s death, Angelou became mute for six years. During her mutism and into her teens, she again lived with her grandmother in Arkansas.
