In his claims to be the inspired translator of the Book of Mormon and other ancient scriptures and the Prophet of the Restoration, Joseph Smith was arguably the most controversial figure in American religious history. Out of reverence for his role, faithful Mormons commonly refer to the Prophet by his first name (and almost never by his last name only).
