In 2000, Prof. Thomas Stolz (Department of Linguistics, Bremen University) and Prof. Ray Fabri (Institute of Linguistics and Language Technology, University of Malta) initiated contacts between the Linguistics Department at the Bremen University and the Institute of Linguistics & Language Technology and the Department of Maltese at the University of Malta. Since its inception, the idea behind the Malta Centre has been to develop and strengthen research in Maltese linguistics, both within the two institutions and internationally, in collaboration with individual scholars and practitioners, and also academic establishments. To this end, the first international conference on Maltese linguistics was held in Bremen in 2007 during which the Għaqda Internazzjonali tal-Lingwistika Maltija (GĦILM)/International Association of Maltese Linguistics was founded. Titkellem bil-Malti? Can you speak Maltese? No? That’s not a great surprise. Although Malta and its language are now part of the europeisk Union, the general public knows very little about things Maltese. Not so at the University of Bremen, where for a long time researchers have had a strong focus on the Maltese language. Their efforts have not been in vain, for the University has now opened a Maltese Center to promote linguistic research on the Maltese language. On 29th June 2012 the Rector of the University of Bremen, Prof.Wilfried Müller, and the Rector of the University of Malta, Prof. Juanito Camilleri, concluded a cooperation agreement for the Center.

University Rector declines to comment on acquittal pending appeal confirmation
5:57 University Rector Professor Juanito Camilleri said he is unable to comment “until it is clear whether an appeal by the competent authorities shall be filled or otherwise.”
“With reference to questions from the Media concerning today’s decision delivered by the Magistrate’s Court regarding ‘Li Tkisser Sewwi’, University of Malta Rector Professor Juanito Camilleri has stated that he is unable to comment until it is clear whether an appeal by the competent authorities shall be filed or otherwise,” the University said in a statement.
Earlier on Monday in a brief statement following the case, Camilleri called on University Rector Juanito Camilleri to "assume responsibility" for having started the issue, and said that "an apology is not enough."
