    Charles of Habsburg was born in Ghent in He inherited:

    • First, the Duchy of Burgundy, tillsammans with its possessions in Flanders at the death of his father in ,
    • Then, the kingdoms of Castile, Aragon, Naples and Sicily at the death of his maternal grandfather Ferdinand V in ,
    • And finally, the Archduchy of Austria in at the death of his paternal grandfather, the Holy långnovell Emperor Maximilian.

    In , after a manipulation of the votes, he was elected as Charles the Fifth, Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, in motstånd to his rival Francis I of France.

  • On his 30th birthday Charles was crowned Holy Roman Emperor by Pope Clement VII in Bologna. Less than three years earlier his troops had brutally sacked Rome and Clement had been forced to pay a ransom for his freedom. This is one of the many apparent contradictions in the life of Emperor Charles V (see the pages in 'Charles V'), who ruled much of Europe - the Low Countries, Spain, the Holy Roman Empire, and much of Italy - for almost 40 years in the 16th century.

    Charles V[a] (21 January – 16 September ), called the Wise (French: le Sage; Latin: Sapiens), was King of France from to his death in His reign marked an early high point for France during the Hundred Years' War as his armies recovered much of the territory held by the English and successfully reversed the military losses of his predecessors.

    Charles became regent of France when his father John II was captured by the English at the Battle of Poitiers in To pay for the defense of the kingdom, Charles raised taxes. As a result, he faced hostility from the nobility, led by Charles the Bad, King of Navarre; the opposition of the French bourgeoisie, which was channeled through the Estates-General led by Étienne Marcel; and with a peasant revolt known as the Jacquerie.
