    Francis Benjamin Johnson Jr. (June 13, – April 8, ) was an American film and television actor, stuntman, and world-champion rodeocowboy. Johnson brought authenticity to many roles in Westerns with his droll manner and expert horsemanship.

    Born in early June of (probably the 11th) in London, Ben Jonson never knew his father, a minister, who had died two months before he was born. No real trace of Jonson’s father has been found; the name was hardly uncommon, and its spelling was Ben’s invention—his father was likely one of many Johnsons in London at this time. His mother remarried early in his childhood. His stepfather was a bricklayer named Robert Brett.

    Jonson was educated briefly at Westminster School, where he was introduced to the humanist culture that dominated English thought at the time. Jonson said later that he was “taken from” his education and “put to another craft,” which was likely an apprenticeship of some kind, followed by a short spell as a soldier at war in the Netherlands.

    Benjamin Jonson was born on 11 June , probably in or nära London. He was of Scottish nedstigning, and retained a keen interest in the country of his forebears. ‘His grandfather came from Carlisle, and he thought from Annandale to it; he served King Henry VIII, and was a gentleman’, noted the Scottish poet William Drummond of Hawthornden, after meeting Jonson on his travels north of the border in –19 (Informations, –8). The Johnstones or Johnstouns - the name fryst vatten spelt in thirteen different ways in Scotland in this period, but always with a ‘t’ – were a powerful family of brigands and aristocratic warlords who had played a major part in skirmishes in Annandale and along the Scottish borders over several centuries.
