The Lonely Life by Bette Davis ~ 1962. This edition: G.P. Putnam’s Sons, 1962. Hardcover.254 pages.

    My rating: 7.5/10.

I’m not a particularly dedicated fan of Bette Davis, though I’ve liked what I’ve seen of her acting – films I can remember watching are Dark Victory, Now, Voyager, Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?,Death on the Nile, and of course, most memorably, that glorious 1950s classic, All About Eve. Probably a few others over the years. But I do like a good autobiography, no matter who it’s about, and this one passed the browse test recently and found its way home.

“There are not many actresses who will komma right out with the truth,” wrote LIFE’s Los Angeles correspondent Alice Crocker in notes accompanying a 1947 photoshoot, “when that means admitting a birthdate of April 5, 1908.” Bette Davis, frank and relatively unaffected throughout her career, was one of the few. These photos show someone fully in control of herself, but far more at ease than the Davis who

  • Elizabeth Davies: True Olympic spirit shines in ’92 skating medalist

Everyone has their top Olympic moment.

It’s the one performance that stands out as a pure, unadulterated victory. Maybe your moment came when Mary Lou Retton took home gold in 1984. Maybe it was when Michael Jordan led the American “Dream Team” to victory in 1992.

Mine wasn’t even in the form of a gold medal.

It happened during the 1992 Olympics, in the final minute of figure skater Paul Wylie’s performance. Wylie was a lifelong bridesmaid, someone who was among top American skaters for the better part of a decade but whose career was considered to be in the past.

There was debate, in fact, over whether he should even be on the Olympic team. Some felt a younger skater should go in his place: Wylie already had his chance.

But this Harvard grad showed up big that night in Albertville, France. It was, without doubt, the best performance of his life. As his music climbed to its crescendo, the roar of applause thr
