He was an American Baptist minister and activist who became the pivotable spokesperson and leader in the civil rights movement starting in 1955. He strongly believed in advancing civil rights through nonviolence and civil disobedience. He credited his Christian beliefs and the nonviolent activism of Mahatma Gandhi.
