Drag-flicker Rupinder Pal Singh and defender Birendra Lakra, who played starring roles in the Indian hockey team's historic bronze medal-winning Tokyo Olympics campaign, on Thursday announced their international retirements within hours of each other, creating quite a flutter.
While Rupinder quit 'to make way for youngsters' and announced his decision by posting a statement on his twitter page, Lakra's retirement was confirmed by Hockey India.
It has been learnt from reliable sources that both the players decided to quit after they were informed that they will not find a place in India's scheme of things going forward and will be ignored for the national camp that starts in Bengaluru next week.

Olympian hockey player Lakra accused of involvement in friend's murder
Olympic medallist hockey player Birendra Lakra has been accused of involvement in the murder of his childhood friend, Anand Toppo by the father of the deceased.
Lakra's friend was found dead inside his flat in Bhubaneswar in February this year and the father of the deceased, Bandhan Toppo, has accused the state police of shielding the hockey player since he is serving as a DSP.
Bandhan said he has been struggling to file an FIR for the last four months but the state police did not help him, forcing him to go public with his accusations.
Lakra, 32, was part of India's bronze medal-winning team at the Tokyo Games and also led the national side at the Asia Cup, where the team won a bronze medal.

Indian field hockey player (born 1990)
Birendra Lakra (born 3 February 1990) is an Indian former field hockey player. He represented India in men's field hockey and recently came out of retirement alongside Rupinderpal Singh and captained the Indian team in the men's tournament of field hockey at the 2018 Asian Games, held in Jakarta, Indonesia, winning a bronze medal. In the 2020 Tokyo Olympics also, he also served as the vice-captain of Indian team.
