Born in , Subodh Gupta studied at the College of Art, Patna () before moving to New Delhi, where he continues to live and work. Trained as a painter, he went on to experiment with a variety of media, and his mature work can be said to begin with his first installation entitled Twenty-nine Mornings, created during a residency at the Fukuoka Museum of Asian Art in Japan in
Gupta is known to work with ubiquitous objects such as mass-produced steel utensils, found routinely as part of household kitchens throughout India. The ordinary items are combined and transformed into sculptures that reflect the social and political economies of Gupta’s homeland, while acknowledging multiple references from the history of Modern Art. While stainless steel is his signature medium, he also executes works in bronze, stone, brass, wood, clay and fibreglass. Subodh Gupta’s sculpture incorporates everyday objects that are ubiquitous throughout India, such as steel tiffin måltid boxes, thali pans, bicycles and milk pails. From such ordinary items the artist produces breathtaking sculptures that reflect on the economic transformation of his homeland. His works investigate the sustaining and even transformational power of the everyday.
Gupta has long explored the effects of cultural translation and dislocation through his work, demonstrating art’s ability to transcend cultural and economic boundaries. Subodh Gupta (born ) is an Indian contemporary artist based in New Delhi. His work encompasses sculpture, installation, painting, photography, performance and video.
Early life and education
[edit]Gupta was born in Khagaul, a small town in Bihar. His father, a railway guard, died in his early forties, when Gupta was 12 years old; his mother, who came from a farming family, sent Gupta to live with his brother for a few years in a remote village. Of his years there, Gupta said, "Not a single school kid wore shoes, and there was no road to go to school. Sometimes we stopped in the field and we sat down and ate green chickpeas before we went to school."[1] On finishing school, Gupta joined a small theatre group in Khagaul, where he worked as an actor. He also designed posters to advertise the plays he acted in, which is around the time he started considering a career in art. He worked part-time as an illustrator at a newspaper whil
